Tinubu Government has blasted Atiku over plan to restore fuel subsidy.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Presidency has criticised African Democratic Congress presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar over his promise to consider restoring Nigeria’s fuel subsidy if elected president in 2027.

Presidential spokesperson Sunday Dare described Atiku’s proposal as an attempt to mislead Nigerians ahead of the general election.

Atiku had said during a recent interview that he would consider reversing President Bola Tinubu’s fuel subsidy removal policy if elected.

Reacting in a statement, Dare described the former vice-president’s position as hypocritical and deceptive.

“Atiku Abubakar, your pronouncement that you will bring back fuel subsidy is drenched in hypocrisy and deceit,” Dare said.

“It is an unpardonable manipulation of the public psyche, designed to hoodwink unsuspecting Nigerians into voting for you.”

The presidential spokesperson argued that restoring the subsidy could undermine the economic recovery allegedly being recorded across various sectors.

“The ongoing recovery across various sectors of our national life annoys you and will be halted if this thinking of yours is implemented,” he added.

“By the grace of God, it will not happen, and all good men of conscience must rise up against you.”

Tinubu announced the removal of the petrol subsidy during his inauguration on May 29, 2023, a decision that triggered increases in fuel prices, transportation costs and the prices of goods and services across the country.

The policy is expected to remain a major campaign issue as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
