Aguata Youths Reject ‘Emi Lokan’ Politics, Demand Competence and Fair Power Rotation in Anambra

“Since Aguata II presently holds the seat of the Local Government Mayor, the House of Representatives seat should, in the spirit of fairness, be zoned to Aguata I South,” the communiqué stated.

Aguata Youths have rejected ‘Emi Lokan’ politics and demanded for competence and fair power rotation in Anambra.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that youth leaders in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State have called for the zoning of the House of Representatives seat to Aguata I South, insisting that competence, fairness, and balanced political representation should guide future elections.

The demand was contained in a communiqué issued after a meeting of the Aguata II North Youth Forum (ANYF) held on Monday in Ezinifite.

The forum, made up of youth leaders and stakeholders from eight communities, 11 wards, and several youth organisations within Aguata II State Constituency, argued that the move became necessary because Aguata II is currently occupying the position of Local Government chairman.

According to the group, allowing Aguata II to retain both the chairmanship and the House of Representatives seat would amount to political imbalance and injustice.

“Since Aguata II presently holds the seat of the Local Government Mayor, the House of Representatives seat should, in the spirit of fairness, be zoned to Aguata I South,” the communiqué stated.

The youths noted that Aguata II had already held the federal constituency seat for eight consecutive years between 2019 and 2027, adding that equity demands a redistribution of political opportunities within the local government.

The forum also raised concerns over what it described as a longstanding imbalance in political appointments and elective offices since 1999, pointing out that Aguata II has dominated the council chairmanship position for years.

To address the issue, the group proposed a rotational arrangement where one zone produces the local government chairman while the other produces the federal lawmaker.

Beyond zoning, the youths stressed the importance of merit and performance in leadership, rejecting what they described as entitlement politics.

“Elective political leadership should not be based on ‘Emi Lokan’. Aguata deserves the best leadership without compromise,” the communiqué read.

The forum further maintained that second-term ambitions should not be treated as automatic entitlements but must be justified by visible performance and quality representation.

On youth inclusion, the group urged political parties to field credible young candidates, pledging support only for aspirants with proven records in youth empowerment and community development.

The youth leaders also commended Anambra State Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo for his developmental initiatives and efforts toward youth inclusion in governance.

Reaffirming their commitment to peace, fairness, and inclusive politics, the forum called on stakeholders across Aguata Federal Constituency to embrace equity and competence in the distribution of political offices.
