“When Power Tries to Replace God” By Festus Edovia

History, scripture, and lived human experience all agree on one truth: no mortal controls destiny.

A dangerous arrogance is creeping into Nigeria’s political space; one that should trouble every citizen, regardless of party affiliation or personal belief. Some politicians now speak and act as though they have assumed the place of God. They boast openly that even if Christ Himself were to lead the opposition, they could never be removed from power.

Such statements betray a frightening illusion of permanence. These leaders speak as though tomorrow is guaranteed, as though their lives and authority are already signed, sealed, and secured in their favour. With stolen wealth and the machinery of the state at their disposal, they convince themselves that the common man is helpless, that resistance is futile, and that power—once seized—can never be lost.

This is the height of delusion.

History, scripture, and lived human experience all agree on one truth: no mortal controls destiny. Yet intoxicated by power, some leaders speak as if the armed forces, the police, and state institutions are eternally under their command. They forget a basic reality—that the owner of life does not consult anyone before taking it back.

Across the world, including in places like Brazil, we have seen what happens when societies mock the Almighty and elevate human pride above divine authority. Power collapses suddenly. Empires fall overnight. The mighty are reduced to footnotes in history.

Nigeria will not be an exception.

It is both unfortunate and tragic that some of our leaders believe money can solve everything. But there is a court where bribery does not work, influence counts for nothing, and stolen wealth becomes evidence against its owner. A day is coming when every individual will stand alone before the Almighty God to give account for their actions—no political connections, no security details, no foreign accounts. Just you and your record.

What a wasted life it is to rule without conscience, to lead without the fear of God, and to amass wealth that will ultimately testify against you.

This world is vanity upon vanity. Power is temporary. Money is fleeting. Titles expire. Only accountability endures.

Soon, very soon we shall all answer for what we have done. And on that day, no amount of ill-gotten wealth will offer any protection.

Let us fear God.
