US House of Representatives are considering resolution condemning persecution of christians in Nigeria.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the United States House of Representatives is reviewing a resolution condemning the ongoing persecution and killings of Christians in Nigeria, while backing President Donald Trump’s decision to redesignate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) due to serious violations of religious freedom.

The resolution, introduced by Representative Riley M. Moore of West Virginia, cites extensive data on targeted violence and urges the US government to increase diplomatic, security, and economic pressure on Nigeria’s authorities. Moore shared the six-page resolution on his X handle.

According to the document, Nigeria is experiencing one of the most severe crises for Christians globally since the start of the Boko Haram insurgency in 2009. It claims:

  • Between 50,000 and 100,000 Christians have been killed for their faith since 2009, with over 7,000 killed in 2025 alone, averaging 35 deaths daily.

  • More than 19,000 churches have been attacked or destroyed.

  • In Benue and Plateau States, over 9,500 people, mostly Christians, were killed between May 2023 and May 2025 by Fulani militants.

  • Christians are reportedly being killed at a rate five times higher than Muslims.

The resolution alleges that these attacks are deliberate campaigns of religious cleansing, perpetrated by groups such as Boko Haram, ISWAP, and Fulani militants, involving massacres, church burnings, kidnappings, and sexual violence.

It supports Trump’s October 31, 2025, CPC redesignation, which enables the US to impose sanctions and take diplomatic measures in response to religious persecution. The resolution also criticizes President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for denying the existence of systematic religious persecution despite widespread reports of violence.

The resolution calls for the US to leverage all available diplomatic, economic, and security tools to ensure Nigeria:

  • Ends impunity for perpetrators of religiously motivated violence,

  • Protects Christian communities and clergy from attacks,

  • Repeals blasphemy laws, and

  • Releases prisoners detained for their faith.

It reaffirms that the United States stands in solidarity with Christians worldwide, defending their right to practice their religion freely and without fear of violence or death.
