Natasha Akpoti and Eberechi Eze among others top Nigeria’s Most-Searched Personalities in Google’s 2025 Year in Search.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Google has released its 2025 Year in Search report, revealing the trends, personalities, and global events that captured the attention of Nigerians throughout the year.

According to the data, Senator Natasha Akpoti and football star Eberechi Eze emerged as the most-searched Nigerian personalities, reflecting the country’s heightened interest in political developments and sports.

The annual report highlights the biggest moments and questions that dominated online curiosity, from breaking news and entertainment to technology and culture.

Google noted that Nigerians relied heavily on Search to stay updated in a year marked by fast-moving headlines. “High-profile figures drove significant interest, with Senator Natasha Akpoti emerging as the #1 most searched Nigerian personality, underscoring how central political discourse was throughout the year,” the report stated.

Beyond Nigerian affairs, global developments also drew substantial attention, especially the Israel–Iran War and the U.S. presidential elections.

What Google Is Saying

Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager for West Africa, explained that the Year in Search reflects the country’s collective concerns and interests.

“The 2025 Year in Search is more than just data; it’s a vibrant, unfiltered mirror of our collective attention,” he said. “From major headlines to trending slang, these lists show how Nigerians use Search to actively engage with the world around them.”

Personalities That Dominated Searches

Nigerians showed strong interest across politics, entertainment, sports, and global pop culture. Local search leaders included:

  • Natasha Akpoti

  • Eberechi Eze

  • Governor Siminalayi Fubara

  • Chika Ike

  • Mr Eazi

  • Kemi Adetiba

  • Hilda Baci

  • VeryDarkMan (VDM)

  • Priscilla Ojo

Internationally, figures such as Gyokeres, Garnacho, Joao Pedro, Tyler Perry, and Aaron Pierre ranked highly.

Entertainment searches also soared, with Aaron Pierre, Chika Ike, Juma Jux, and Mr Eazi featuring among top-searched artists.

Unusual phrases and word meanings like Achalugo, allegedly, and Labubu also stirred online curiosity.

How 2025 Compared to Previous Trends

In 2024, personalities such as Bobrisky, musicians Shallipopi and Khaid, and major topics including the U.S. elections, the new national anthem, and national grid issues led Nigeria’s online searches.

Popular entertainment searches included A Tribe Called Judah, Treasure In The Sky, Supacell, and Queen of Tears. Nigerians also turned to Google with questions such as “How much is dollar to naira today?” and “Who won the U.S. presidential election?”

What Nigerians Searched for Most in 2025

 

The passing of public figures significantly influenced search spikes, with high interest in:

  • Former President Muhammadu Buhari

  • Pope Francis

  • Diogo Jota

  • Charlie Kirk

Leading news topics included the Club World Cup, iPhone 17, and global political events.

Tech enthusiasts drove searches for trending devices such as:

  • iPhone 17

  • Tecno Pop 10 / Pop 10 Pro

  • Redmi 14C / 15C

  • Tecno Spark 40

Nigerians also looked for answers to trending questions like:

  • “Who is Charlie Kirk?”

  • “Who is Seyi Vodi?”

  • “Who is the new pope?”

  • “What is Labubu?”

  • “What is state of emergency?”

  • “What is war crime?”

  • “What is the meaning of Kelebu?”

Culinary searches remained popular, with recipes such as Martini, Ginger Shots, Chinchin, Hummus, Sausage Rolls, and Chickwizz trending.

Top Entertainment Searches

In music, standout songs included:

  • Oluwatosin (Jesus Is Enough) – Tkeyz ft. Steve Hills

  • Joy Is Coming – Fido

  • With You – Davido ft. Omah Lay

  • Laho – Shallipopi

  • My Darling – Chella

  • Fun – Rema

In film, audiences were drawn to titles such as:

  • Straw

  • Sinners

  • Love in Every Word

  • G20
