President has suspended Supreme Court Chief Justice over alleged misconduct.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the President of Ghana has suspended the country’s top judge, Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo, while she faces an investigation into alleged misconduct.

This action follows three petitions that called for her removal, accusing her of tampering with court records and misusing public funds.

A spokesperson for President John Mahama confirmed that, after consulting with the Council of State, the President determined that there was sufficient reason to suspend Torkornoo pending the investigation.

The details of the allegations being investigated are not yet public.

The committee overseeing the investigation is led by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Pwamang, and includes former auditor-general Daniel Domelevo.

Torkornoo, who became Ghana’s 15th Chief Justice and the third woman to hold the role in June 2023, is the first sitting chief justice to be formally investigated under the constitutional process.
