Democrats has taken the control of US Congress in 2026 Midterm Elections, dealing a major blow to Trump.
NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Democratic Party has secured control of both chambers of the United States Congress in the 2026 midterm elections, delivering a major political setback to President Donald Trump and his Republican Party.
The victories in the House of Representatives and Senate end Republican control of Congress and give Democrats greater legislative and oversight powers to challenge Trump’s administration during the final two years of his presidency.
According to projections by major US media organisations, including CNN and the Associated Press, Democrats made significant gains across the country, defeating several Republican candidates in states that Trump won comfortably during the 2024 presidential election.

The results represent a major shift in the balance of political power in Washington, with Democrats expected to use their congressional majorities to scrutinise the administration’s policies and decisions.
In the Senate, Democrats flipped several Republican-held seats, including historic victories in Texas, South Carolina and Kansas.
In Texas, Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton, becoming the first Democrat elected to the US Senate from the state since 1988.
The victory marked a significant breakthrough for Democrats in a state that has remained a Republican stronghold for decades.
In South Carolina, Democrat Annie Andrews defeated Republican Darline Graham, becoming the first woman elected to the US Senate from the state and the first Democrat to win a Senate seat there in more than two decades.
Democrats also secured victories in North Carolina, Ohio, Iowa and other competitive states, expanding their representation in the upper chamber.
The party’s Senate victories included several seats previously held by Republicans, helping it cross the threshold required to control the 100-member chamber.
