NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Former West Ham United midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker has urged Bruno Fernandes to hand over the Manchester United captaincy to another player.
Reo-Coker believes relieving the Portugal international of the leadership responsibility could improve his performances on the pitch by easing the pressure on him.
He made the comments after Fernandes captained the Red Devils to a 3-2 victory over AS Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Fernandes scored from the penalty spot, while his teammate Matheus Cunha grabbed a brace to help the Premier League side overcome the Serie A club at Old Trafford.
Speaking on CBS Sports Golazo, Reo-Coker acknowledged Fernandes’ quality but questioned whether he should continue as United’s leader.
“You [Fernandes] are a great player, but you’re not going to be the leader,” he said.
“Give it [Man United’s captaincy] to someone else who you can be consistent with, and just take that burden of pressure off you.”
