Atiku Abubakar is currently facing pressure to step down as Peter Obi–Kwankwaso alliance has gained ground ahead of 2027 elections.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is facing increasing pressure to drop his 2027 presidential ambition amid growing momentum for a joint ticket between Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) primaries.

The emerging alliance between the Obidient and Kwankwassiyya movements is reshaping opposition dynamics, with supporters pushing for a unified front to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the next general election.

While Atiku’s camp, reportedly backed by media figure Dele Momodu is advocating for an Atiku-Obi ticket, a growing number of stakeholders within the party favour an Obi-Kwankwaso combination, arguing it offers a stronger electoral advantage.

Sources indicate that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is among those supporting the proposed Obi-Kwankwaso ticket, alongside broader calls for a united opposition coalition.

Calls for Atiku to Step Aside

Pressure has been mounting across both northern and southern blocs of the party for Atiku to give ground to younger contenders.

Senator Victor Umeh recently urged the former vice president to step aside, noting his long-standing presence in presidential races since 2003. Similarly, media analyst Jimi Disu argued that Atiku stepping down could boost the opposition’s chances, suggesting he would be viewed as a statesman for doing so.

Atiku Maintains Position

Despite the pressure, Atiku has maintained confidence in his electoral strength, particularly in the northern region. He argued that no other aspirant in the ADC currently matches his political reach.

However, he has publicly pledged to support any consensus candidate that emerges through a democratic process, including Obi if selected.

Obi–Kwankwaso Alliance Gains Momentum

Supporters under the newly formed Obi–Kwankwaso (OK) Movement are intensifying efforts to secure the ADC ticket.

A spokesperson for the Kwankwassiyya Movement, Habibu Mohammad, confirmed ongoing talks, revealing that Kwankwaso is willing to serve as running mate to Obi if it strengthens the coalition’s chances.

“We are aligning to present a credible alternative and ensure a strong outing against the ruling party,” he said.

Growing Division Within Opposition

The contest for the ADC ticket has triggered sharp divisions between Atiku loyalists and supporters of the Obi-Kwankwaso alliance.

While some back Atiku’s experience and northern appeal, others insist that only a fresh ticket led by Obi can galvanise nationwide support.

Political observers warn that internal divisions could weaken the opposition’s chances if not resolved before the primaries, as stakeholders continue to call for unity ahead of the 2027 elections.
