Ahead of Dangote Refinery IPO $5bn listing, expert has identified investor opportunities and crude supply risks.
NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Professor Emeritus of Petroleum Economics and energy expert, Prof. Wunmi Iledare, has expressed optimism about the investment prospects of Dangote Refinery’s proposed $5 billion initial public offering, IPO.
The refinery is preparing for a planned October 2026 listing after securing a $1 billion underwriting programme to support the offer, which could become one of Africa’s largest public listings.

Speaking in an interview with DAILY POST, Iledare said the refinery’s commercial prospects were favourable but noted that prospective investors would closely examine the sustainability and cost of its crude oil supply.
“What investors are looking at is the prospect, and the prospect is good,” he said.
According to Iledare, sourcing some production inputs outside Nigeria should not undermine the refinery’s competitiveness, provided it retains the financial capacity to secure the required crude and other materials.
“You cannot find any country in the world that is not sourcing one material or the other for the manufacturing of goods and services that they are producing,” he said.
“The only thing that the investor may be looking at is sustainability and accessibility to crude supplies.”
The energy economist explained that sourcing most of its inputs domestically could provide the refinery with a competitive advantage by lowering logistical costs and reducing exposure to external supply disruptions.
However, the cost, availability and reliability of crude supplies will remain important considerations for investors assessing the refinery’s profitability and long-term performance.
Dangote Refinery has secured a $1 billion underwriting programme comprising a completed $600 million private placement and a further $400 million commitment linked to the planned IPO.
The refinery has reportedly applied to Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission to raise about $5 billion through the offer, subject to regulatory approval and market conditions.
Located in Lagos, the refinery has an installed capacity of 650,000 barrels per day and supplies petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and other refined products to Nigeria and international markets.
The Dangote Refinery IPO will allow qualified retail and institutional investors to acquire equity in the refinery while providing additional capital to support its expansion and other business objectives.
Despite the positive outlook, investment returns will ultimately depend on the final offer price, valuation, profitability, debt profile, dividend policy, crude-supply arrangements and regulatory environment.
