European football has always belonged, at least financially and historically, to the grandest names. Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Barcelona and AC Milan have filled the European Cup’s roll of honour.
Yet every generation produces a reminder that the competition was never designed solely for the powerful.
Here are four of the European Cup’s most romantic Cinderella triumphs.
Celtic, 1967
Celtic’s triumph remains one of the purest underdog stories in European football.
Jock Stein’s side became the first British club to win the European Cup, defeating two-time champions Inter Milan 2-1 in Lisbon. Inter led through Sandro Mazzola’s seventh-minute penalty, but Tommy Gemmell equalised before Stevie Chalmers struck six minutes from time.

Remarkably, all but one of Celtic’s 15-man squad had been born within 15km of Celtic Park.
Nottingham Forest, 1979
Few football fairy tales can rival Nottingham Forest’s astonishing rise under Brian Clough. Having been promoted to England’s top flight in 1977, Forest won the First Division title in 1978 and entered the European Cup as domestic champions.
What followed was extraordinary. Forest eliminated defending European champions Liverpool 2-0 on aggregate before sweeping aside AEK Athens, Grasshopper and Köln. Against Köln, a 3-3 first-leg draw appeared to leave the English side vulnerable, but Ian Bowyer’s goal secured a 1-0 victory in Germany.
In the final, Trevor Francis headed the only goal against Malmö in Munich. Forest had conquered Europe at the first attempt.
Porto, 1987
Bayern Munich were expected to complete the job in Vienna. Porto had other plans.
Bayern took the lead through Ludwig Kögl, but Porto refused to accept the script. Rabah Madjer produced one of European football’s most famous backheels to equalise before Juary completed the turnaround with a volley. Porto won 2-1 to claim their first European trophy.
It was not simply a victory over Bayern; it was a declaration that Portugal could produce European champions beyond the traditional elite.
Steaua București, 1986
Barcelona arrived in Seville carrying the weight of expectation. Steaua București, from Romania, were the outsiders. Few could have imagined how dramatically the balance would shift.
Steaua had already negotiated Vejle, Honvéd, Kuusysi Lahti and Anderlecht to reach the final. Barcelona, meanwhile, had overcome Juventus and survived a remarkable semi-final against IFK Göteborg.
After 120 goalless minutes, everything rested on penalties. Then came Helmut Duckadam. The Steaua goalkeeper saved all four Barcelona attempts as his side won the shootout 2-0. It was the first European Cup triumph by a club from Eastern Europe.
PSV Eindhoven, 1988
PSV’s 1988 campaign was a masterclass in survival. After eliminating Real Madrid in the semi-finals, PSV faced Benfica in the final in Stuttgart.
Neither side scored across 120 minutes, leaving the trophy to be decided by penalties. PSV prevailed, completing a remarkable European Cup victory despite the final itself producing no goals.
Red Star Belgrade, 1991
Red Star’s journey to Bari was built on nerve, intelligence and the ability to unsettle established powers. In the semi-final they stunned Bayern Munich 2-1 in Germany before surviving a 2-2 draw in Belgrade, with an own goal deciding the tie.
The final against Marseille was a tactical battle rather than the expected spectacle. After 120 minutes without a goal, Red Star prevailed 5-3 on penalties.
