Peter Obi Facing Intense Scrutiny Over 2027 Presidency Chances – Ejimakor

Ejimakor made the claim in a statement on Saturday while defending Obi’s record as governor of Anambra State and commenting on the political scrutiny surrounding the former governor.

Ejimakor has stated that Peter Obi is facing intense scrutiny over his 2027 presidency chances.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Aloy Ejimakor, Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, has said former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is facing heightened scrutiny because of his bid for the presidency in the 2027 election.

Ejimakor made the claim in a statement on Saturday while defending Obi’s record as governor of Anambra State and commenting on the political scrutiny surrounding the former governor.

He argued that the scrutiny goes beyond Obi’s record as a former governor, linking it to what he described as the significance of an Igbo politician mounting a serious presidential bid.

“There’s no other ex-Governor that can boast of what is contained in the screenshot below. None!” Ejimakor said.

“And this is not happening to Obi just because he’s an ex-Governor. It’s happening because he’s running for President.”

Ejimakor further claimed that the scrutiny had evolved from a dispute involving Obi and Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo into what he described as a broader political contest involving ethnic interests.

“So, it has gone from a mere spat between Soludo and Obi to a grand national conspiracy of ethnic partisans who are alarmed that Peter Obi is the first Igbo man that appears to have a fighting chance of clinching the presidency since the end of the civil war,” he said.

The lawyer also defended Obi’s record in Anambra, describing his tenure as being characterised by prudent financial management, zero debt and investments in infrastructure and education.

“It is a stark irony of Nigerian politics that Peter Obi, a former governor whose tenure in Anambra was defined by prudent financial management, zero debt, and visible investments in infrastructure and education, remains the country’s most heavily scrutinized ex-governor,” Ejimakor said.

He also criticised what he described as unequal scrutiny of Nigerian politicians, arguing that allegations concerning other political figures do not always attract the same level of public attention.

“While politicians with documented histories of systemic corruption and unexplainable wealth walk free with minimal pushback, Obi’s public record of integrity is constantly dissected under an aggressive microscope,” he said.

Ejimakor said the situation reflected what he regarded as a double standard in Nigeria’s political environment, arguing that transparency and accountability could themselves lead to increased political scrutiny.

“This double standard exposes a flawed political environment: in Nigeria, transparency and accountability do not shield you from endless political targeting; they inexplicably make you a bigger target for partisan witch-hunts,” he added.

Ejimakor’s comments come amid continuing public debate over Obi’s record as Anambra governor and his political activities ahead of the 2027 presidential election. His assessment of Obi’s record and the motives behind the scrutiny are his own claims and have not been independently established.
