Nigeria Ranks 56th Among World’s 60 Poorest Countries in 2026 (FULL LIST)

Nigeria has been ranked 56th mong World’s 60 Poorest Countries in 2026.

NewsOnline reports that Nigeria has been ranked 56th among the world’s 60 poorest countries in a 2026 assessment published by Global Finance magazine.

The country recorded a gross domestic product per capita based on purchasing power parity of $9,532.92, falling from 44th position in the publication’s 2025 ranking.

GDP per capita at purchasing power parity adjusts economic output per person for differences in living costs and inflation across countries. However, it does not directly measure household income, inequality or individual living standards.

According to the Global Finance ranking, Burundi emerged as the poorest country, with GDP per capita of $994.23. It was followed by the Central African Republic at $1,437.72 and South Sudan at $1,467.19.

Nine of the 10 lowest-ranked countries are in Africa, with Yemen, ranked fourth at $1,590.19, the only country outside the continent in the bottom 10.

The other countries were Mozambique, Malawi, Somalia, Liberia, Madagascar and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Other African countries featured prominently in the ranking. Niger occupied the 11th position with $2,108.46, Sudan ranked 13th with $2,427.43, while Burkina Faso placed 16th with $3,060.34.

Kenya ranked 44th with GDP per capita of $7,590.60, followed by Zimbabwe in 46th place with $7,985.23. Côte d’Ivoire ranked 48th at $8,165.34, while Ghana placed 51st with $8,613.25.

Djibouti ranked immediately ahead of Nigeria in 55th place with $9,435.70. Nicaragua, Bangladesh, Angola and Laos completed the ranking.

The assessment showed some significant changes from 2025. Burundi moved from second to first place, while South Sudan shifted from first to third. The Democratic Republic of the Congo moved from seventh to 10th, while Nigeria fell 12 places from 44th to 56th.

African countries accounted for most of the economies featured at the lower end of the ranking, highlighting the continent’s persistent challenges with poverty, conflict, weak infrastructure, limited industrialisation and unequal access to economic opportunities.
