Nationwide Flood Alert

FG has issued a nationwide flood alert in 19 states and 76 locations amid heavy rainfall threat.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Federal Government has issued an urgent flood alert for 19 states and 76 specific locations across Nigeria as heavy rainfall is forecast between August 5 and August 9, 2025.

The National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre, under the Federal Ministry of Environment, released the warning on Tuesday, following fresh flooding incidents in Ogun and Gombe states that left roads, homes, and vehicles submerged.

States on High Alert as Flood Risk Grows

According to the alert, the flood-prone states include:

Lagos, Delta, Plateau, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Ebonyi, Cross River, Nasarawa, Benue, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Kano, Niger, Taraba, Jigawa, Yobe, Zamfara, Sokoto, Borno, and Gombe.

Residents in these areas have been strongly advised to stay informed, avoid flood-prone zones, and take necessary precautionary measures.

“This forecast is based on rainfall data and hydrological models. Communities in the listed areas must prepare for potential flash floods, river overflows, and related hazards,” the agency said.

Recent Deadly Floods Highlight Growing Crisis

The latest advisory comes on the heels of multiple deadly flood events that have hit Nigeria in 2025. In May, over 200 people reportedly lost their lives in Mokwa, Niger State, after a dam collapse worsened already severe flooding.

In April, 13 people died in Kwara State and parts of Mokwa due to floods caused by water released from Jebba Dam, devastating rice farms and displacing hundreds.

More recently, Rivers State recorded at least 25 deaths following landslides and flash flooding across several communities.

Government Urges Preparedness

The Federal Government has tasked state governments, emergency response agencies, and local communities to remain on high alert, activate early warning systems, and coordinate evacuation efforts where necessary.

Climate experts warn that unless drainage systems are improved and environmental practices are enforced, Nigeria may face increasingly severe flooding due to climate change.
