FG has made audacious move to purchase 12 U.S. attack Helicopters from Trump’s government.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Sunday said it has advanced discussions with the United States Government and Bell Textron on the planned acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters.

This Nigeria news platform understands that the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, confirmed the development at the close of a four-day meeting held in San Diego, California, which ended on June 13, 2025.

The meeting brought together U.S. government officials and representatives of Bell Textron, the U.S.-based manufacturer of the helicopters.

According to a statement issued by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the engagement focused on programme review, procurement timelines, and technical cooperation for the integration of the aircraft into NAF operations.

During the meeting, Air Marshal Abubakar acknowledged the existing military relationship between Nigeria and the U.S.

“We are deeply grateful to the United States Government for its enduring strategic partnership with Nigeria,” he stated.

He noted that the helicopters, once delivered, are expected to improve NAF’s capacity to execute air operations.

“The acquisition of the AH-1Z Viper helicopters will significantly enhance the Nigerian Air Force’s combat effectiveness, operational efficiency, and mission readiness,” he said.

While the helicopters are yet to be delivered, the CAS said the Air Force is working to fast-track the procurement process.

“We are fully committed to ensuring these platforms are delivered in the shortest possible time. Every necessary step will be taken to facilitate a seamless procurement and integration process,” he declared.

The CAS also visited Camp Pendleton in California, where he toured two U.S. Marine Corps units—HMLA-367 and MALS-39—responsible for the operation and maintenance of the AH-1Z platform.

The visit included a direct inspection of the helicopters and an exchange with U.S. Marine Corps officers on maintenance and logistics systems.

“This visit has provided a unique opportunity to understand best practices for the operation, sustainment, and logistical support of the AH-1Z platform from the United States Marine Corps,” he remarked.

Abubakar stated that the NAF plans to use future air assets in internal security operations across the country.

“Our goal is to create enduring peace while protecting innocent lives and property in line with internationally accepted rules of engagement,” he said.

Abubakar also acknowledged federal-level political backing for the procurement process.

“The progress made in the AH-1Z acquisition project is a direct reflection of the President’s unwavering commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture,” he added.
