Conor Gallagher has revealed the true reason for his departure from Chelsea, breaking his silence on the move.
Newsonline Nigeria reports that former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher revealed that his departure from Stamford Bridge was driven by the club’s inability to assure him a long-term future.
The 24-year-old, now with Atletico Madrid, also dismissed claims that new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca found his playing style unsuitable for the team’s possession-focused tactics.
Currently on international duty with the England squad ahead of their Nations League match against Ireland on Saturday, Gallagher addressed the media regarding his move.
“Chelsea make their own decisions, and they’ve signed some top players on long-term contracts,” Gallagher said.
“That wasn’t the case for me, but I believe the outcome worked well for everyone. I explored my options and took a broader view of my career. The moment I heard Atletico Madrid was interested, I was excited.”
Addressing claims that his technical ability didn’t fit Maresca’s style, Gallagher responded, “I don’t agree with that. Last season, I had a strong run with Chelsea, and Mauricio Pochettino showed his faith in me by playing me in every game.”
