ASUU has threatened a nationwide university strike over unimplemented agreement.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to shut down academic activities in public universities across Nigeria if the Federal Government and state governments fail to address its outstanding demands.

The warning was contained in a statement issued by the union’s President, Christopher Piwuna, on Friday.

ASUU said it could reactivate its nationwide strike “without any further notice”, citing the failure of the government to fully implement the agreement reached with the union in December 2025.

The union also listed the non-remittance of billions of naira deducted from lecturers’ salaries among its outstanding grievances.

The latest threat followed an emergency meeting of ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) held at the University of Abuja.

According to the union, the December 2025 agreement was reached after more than eight years of negotiations and struggles between the lecturers and government.

However, ASUU said the agreement had not been fully implemented by the Federal Government and several state governments.

The union expressed concern over what it described as continued delays in addressing issues affecting the welfare and working conditions of university lecturers.

“Unless immediate and concrete steps are taken to fully and comprehensively address issues bordering on the welfare and well-being of Nigerian academics, ASUU-NEC will not accept any blame for calling out its members on a nationwide strike action within the shortest time possible,” Piwuna said.

The union’s latest position raises the prospect of another disruption to academic activities in Nigeria’s public universities if the outstanding issues are not resolved.

ASUU has therefore urged the government at both federal and state levels to take immediate steps towards implementing the December 2025 agreement and addressing the other grievances raised by the union.
