Uber has shut down operations in Nigeria after 12 years.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that global ride-hailing company Uber has announced the closure of its operations in Nigeria, ending a 12-year presence in the country.

The company said its services would cease effective Wednesday, September 2, 2026, following what it described as a thorough review of its Nigerian business.

Uber disclosed the decision in an email sent to users.

“After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026,” the company stated.

Uber launched in Lagos in 2014 and subsequently expanded to several Nigerian cities, connecting passengers with independent drivers through its digital platform.

The company thanked Nigerians for using its services for daily commutes, visits to family and friends, and movement across cities over the past 12 years.

“Since we first launched in Lagos in 2014, it has been an absolute privilege to be a part of your daily life, connecting you with independent transportation providers,” Uber said.

The company acknowledged that its departure could disrupt the routines of customers who rely on the platform.

“We know this may cause disruption to your routine, and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience,” it added.

Uber did not provide specific reasons for leaving Nigeria beyond citing the outcome of its business review.

The exit represents a major development in Nigeria’s ride-hailing industry, where Uber has competed with Bolt, inDrive, LagRide and other mobility platforms.

Its departure could also affect thousands of independent drivers who have used the platform to earn income, although the company’s email did not provide details about transition arrangements for driver-partners.

Uber advised customers with outstanding account-related questions to contact its support team before September 23, 2026.

The company’s Nigerian website still listed several operational cities at the time of reporting, including Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Kano, Enugu, Uyo, Owerri and Warri.

Uber’s withdrawal from Nigeria comes as the company undertakes a wider global restructuring. It also follows its exit from Tanzania in January 2026 after the company cited regulatory conditions affecting the long-term sustainability of its operations.

The company has not said whether its Nigerian exit is temporary or whether it plans to return to the market in the future.
