Stomach Infrastructure and Nigerian Politics: Why Patronage Should Never Replace Accountability

Adding to public frustration is the visible disconnect between many political office holders and ordinary Nigerians.

The phrase “stomach infrastructure” has become one of the most enduring expressions in Nigeria’s political vocabulary. Originally used to describe politics that prioritises immediate material needs over long-term development, it has evolved into a symbol of a deeper national challenge—where personal survival and patronage often overshadow accountability, competence, and good governance.

It is increasingly common to see individuals vigorously defend political leaders, not necessarily because those leaders have delivered meaningful results, but because they benefit directly or indirectly from the system. Whether through appointments, contracts, financial incentives, or other forms of patronage, personal gain can sometimes take precedence over the broader public interest.

This reality raises important questions about the health of Nigeria’s democracy. A democratic system thrives when citizens evaluate leaders based on performance, transparency, and their ability to improve the lives of the people. When loyalty is determined primarily by personal benefits, public accountability inevitably suffers.

The challenges confronting Nigeria today are difficult to ignore. Rising inflation, unemployment, insecurity, kidnapping, persistent electricity shortages, and the increasing cost of living continue to affect millions of households. These issues have placed enormous pressure on families and businesses, making effective governance more important than ever.

Yet, despite these realities, there remains a section of the political class and their supporters who consistently defend government performance while dismissing legitimate concerns raised by citizens. Constructive criticism is sometimes portrayed as disloyalty, even though holding leaders accountable is one of the cornerstones of democracy.

Adding to public frustration is the visible disconnect between many political office holders and ordinary Nigerians. While millions struggle with declining purchasing power and limited access to quality healthcare and education, many members of the political elite continue to enjoy privileges that place them far from the daily realities experienced by the average citizen.

This growing disconnect reinforces the perception that political power has become more about preserving personal interests than delivering public service. When governance is measured by the distribution of temporary handouts rather than sustainable economic policies, institutional reforms, quality education, healthcare, security, and infrastructure, the nation’s long-term development suffers.

The danger of “stomach infrastructure” lies not only in the immediate exchange of political loyalty for personal benefits but also in the culture it creates. It discourages merit, weakens democratic institutions, and reduces elections to contests of patronage instead of competitions of ideas and competence.

Nigeria’s future depends on citizens demanding higher standards from those who seek public office. Political leaders should be assessed on measurable outcomes, respect for the rule of law, prudent management of public resources, and policies that create opportunities for all—not just for a privileged few.

Likewise, elected officials must recognise that public office is a position of trust, not a vehicle for personal enrichment or political patronage. Transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance remain essential ingredients for sustainable national development.

The Nigerian people deserve more than political slogans or short-term relief. They deserve institutions that function effectively, leaders who place the national interest above personal gain, and policies that improve security, expand economic opportunities, strengthen education and healthcare, and enhance the quality of life for every citizen.

Moving beyond the politics of “stomach infrastructure” requires a collective commitment from both leaders and citizens. Democracy flourishes when public support is earned through performance rather than patronage. Only by strengthening accountability and rewarding good governance can Nigeria fully realise its enormous potential.
