OPay has threatened legal action against X user over fake September shutdown claim.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that digital financial services provider OPay has threatened legal action against an X user accused of circulating a false notice claiming that the company would suspend operations indefinitely from September 1, 2026.

In a demand notice dated August 31, 2026, OPay Digital Services Limited directed the user, identified by the handle @haifah_er_abba, to permanently delete the publication, issue an unequivocal retraction and tender an unreserved apology.

The notice, signed by OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Moses Rokosu, stated that the company became aware of the publication on August 30.

According to OPay, the user allegedly misinformed the public that the company was going on an indefinite break and advised customers to withdraw funds from their accounts.

The financial institution described the publication as “false, malicious, unlawful, libellous and defamatory,” adding that it lacked any factual, legal or ethical basis.

“It is our position that the said publication is false, malicious, unlawful, libellous, defamatory and lacks any factual, legal or ethical basis whatsoever,” the notice read.

OPay further alleged that the publication infringed on its rights, damaged its reputation and affected its business operations.

The company gave the X user until 11:59 p.m. on August 31 to remove the publication from X and any other platform, retract the claim and issue an apology.

“Take notice that your action has caused irreparable damage to us, and we shall take all appropriate legal action against you and shall pursue all remedies available to us,” OPay warned.

The legal notice followed the circulation of a fabricated announcement claiming that OPay would stop processing transactions and providing account-related services from September 1.

OPay had earlier dismissed the viral shutdown claim, assuring customers that its operations would continue without interruption.

“This is false! OPay is not going on break by September. We’re here, and we’re going nowhere,” the company stated.

OPay also highlighted signs that the purported announcement was fake, including the use of an outdated logo, the incorrect spelling of its brand name and a design that did not conform to its official communication template.

The company urged customers and members of the public to verify information before sharing it and to rely only on its verified communication channels for official updates.
