Nigerians can now look up their home addresses and obtain digital postcodes through the Federal Government’s National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, introduced through the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST).
Launched nationwide on October 1, 2026, the system assigns an 11-character alphanumeric code to each addressable building, making it easier for residents, businesses and service providers to identify and share precise locations.
The platform allows users to search for locations using street addresses, place names, postcodes and aliases. Some address records also display homeowners’ names where properties are commonly identified by their owners’ names.
The new system is designed to improve address identification and support services such as parcel delivery, logistics, emergency response and public service delivery.
Here is how to check your digital postcode, locate your home on the map and verify the address information associated with your building.
1. Visit the Official NIPOST Postcode Website
To get started, visit the official NIPOST postcode platform at https://postcode.gov.ng.
Select the “Find my postcode” option to access the search function.

Users can also download the NIPOST Postcode application through the official website. According to the information provided on the platform, the Android application is available on Google Play, while the iOS version is listed as coming soon.
2. Search for Your Home Address
Enter your house number, street name, neighbourhood or another relevant location detail in the search field.
You may also search using a place name, postcode or alias, where available.
Review the search results and select the entry that matches your home address. Check the accompanying map to confirm that the location corresponds to your building.
Pay attention to nearby roads, neighbouring properties and recognisable landmarks to avoid selecting the wrong address.
Once you identify the correct building, the platform should display its associated digital postcode.
3. Check Whether Your Name Appears on the Platform
Some properties may appear under their owners’ names because residents commonly use those names to identify buildings, particularly in areas where formal street addresses are unclear.
NIPOST Postmaster-General, Tola Odeyemi, explained that officials collected both standard and informal addresses during field data gathering.
“During ground data collection, we collected standard or informal addresses of buildings,” she said, according to a report by TheCable.
In communities where buildings lack clear street names or house numbers, residents may identify a property by the name of its owner.
To check whether your name appears, inspect the address description associated with your building. You can also search for your name if it is commonly used to identify the property.
However, your name does not have to appear for your building to have a digital postcode. The code identifies the building or addressable location rather than its owner or occupants.
Therefore, a failed search for your name does not necessarily mean your property is missing from the system.
4. Use Your Phone’s Location to Find Your Building
If you are at or near your home, your phone’s location feature can help you identify the correct building on the map.
Follow these steps:
- Enable location services on your smartphone.
- Open the NIPOST Postcode application or the official postcode website.
- Allow location access if your device or browser requests permission.
- Select the “Find My Postcode” option, where available.
- Locate your position on the map and identify the building corresponding to your address.
- Select the correct building to retrieve its digital postcode.
Make sure you select your exact building, as neighbouring properties may have different postcodes.
5. Correct Errors or Request a Missing Postcode
If your building appears on the platform but its address details are incorrect, look for the available option to suggest a correction.
If your building does not have a postcode, you can use the platform’s available request process to submit the relevant address and location details.
Providing your house number, street name, neighbourhood and a map location, where available, can help NIPOST identify the property. A Google Maps link may also be useful when submitting a request.
NIPOST reviews requests for missing postcodes and proposed corrections before updating its records.
Residents should ensure that the information they submit accurately identifies their buildings to reduce the risk of incorrect address records.
6. Understand What Your Digital Postcode Means
Nigeria’s digital postcode system identifies a building or addressable location, rather than an individual resident.
This means that people living in the same building can use the same digital postcode alongside their regular written address.
If a resident moves to another building, they will use the postcode assigned to the new location.
The system is intended to make it easier to identify properties for deliveries, logistics operations, emergency response and other location-dependent services.
According to information on the official platform, finding, saving and sharing a digital postcode is free.
Why Nigeria Introduced the New Digital Postcode System
The National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System is intended to improve how buildings and locations are identified across Nigeria.
By assigning digital codes to addressable buildings, the system could help reduce difficulties associated with incomplete addresses, unclear street names and informal directions.
It could also support businesses that depend on accurate location information, including e-commerce companies, courier services and logistics operators.
For residents, the immediate benefit is the ability to look up a building’s digital postcode, verify its location and share the code when providing an address.
Nigerians are advised to confirm that the building displayed on the map matches their intended destination before using or sharing its postcode.
