The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said he would not abuse President Bola Tinubu, insisting that the President has his respect.
Obi made the statement on Friday at the 2026 All Nigeria Editors’ Conference in Enugu, organised by the Nigerian Guild of Editors.
The conference is themed “The Ballot, the Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive,” with discussions focused on the role of the media in strengthening democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the event, Obi said political disagreements should centre on policies, governance and performance rather than personal attacks against political office holders.

“I cannot abuse any governor. I cannot abuse anybody in government. I don’t need to abuse people even in the federal government. I’ve never abused anybody,” Obi said.
“Who has seen me calling President Tinubu’s name? Never! I will not do that. He’s the President of the country, he has all my respect,” he added.
The former Anambra State governor, however, said respect for public office holders should not prevent citizens and the media from scrutinising their decisions and assessing their performance.
Obi urged editors to critically examine political leaders based on their records, public statements and qualifications, stressing the importance of accountability in a democratic system.
He also said the character and conduct of political leaders could have an influence on the wider society, making it important for the media to provide citizens with factual information that can help them assess those seeking public office.
The NDC candidate’s comments came as political parties and candidates prepare for the 2027 general elections, with the media expected to play a significant role in informing voters and scrutinising political actors.
The conference also featured discussions on electoral integrity, misinformation and the media’s responsibility ahead of the 2027 polls. The Nigerian Guild of Editors has emphasised the importance of verification and responsible reporting, particularly amid concerns over AI-generated disinformation.
