N10m Support Scheme for Tertiary Institution Staff

FG has unveiled N10m Support Scheme for Tertiary Institution Staff.

In a major step towards revitalising the education sector, the Federal Government has officially launched a N10 million support scheme for staff of tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

Known as the Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund (TISSF), the initiative is designed to improve the welfare, financial stability, and professional development of academic and non-academic staff in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

Under the scheme, eligible staff can access loans of up to N10 million, subject to a maximum of 33.3% of their gross annual salary. The funds can be used for critical needs such as transportation, medical expenses, and small-scale enterprise ventures, including poultry farming and other micro-businesses.

The programme was unveiled at a high-level stakeholder meeting in Abuja and announced through a statement by the Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo.

Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, described the initiative as a game-changer for the nation’s tertiary education system. “TISSF is not just about welfare—it’s about empowerment. We are ensuring that our education workforce is supported to live well, grow professionally, and contribute meaningfully to the excellence of our institutions,” he said.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the scheme will be administered in partnership with the Bank of Industry (BOI), which will oversee disbursement to ensure transparency, accountability, and efficiency.

Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, noted that the programme was developed after broad consultations with institutional leaders, staff unions, and other stakeholders. She emphasized that a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation framework is in place to measure impact and drive long-term success.

The launch event drew strong endorsements from key sector players, including representatives from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), BOI, vice-chancellors, rectors, and provosts, who hailed the move as timely and essential to boosting staff morale, reducing financial stress, and improving performance across Nigeria’s higher institutions.
