ECOWAS has condemned the attempted Military Coup in Benin and vowed to defend democracy in Africa.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has raised strong alarm over an attempted military takeover in the Republic of Benin, describing the incident as a serious and intolerable threat to the nation’s democratic order.

In a statement released on Sunday in Abuja, the regional bloc firmly condemned what it termed an unconstitutional move, stressing the need for strict adherence to Benin’s constitutional provisions.

ECOWAS praised the swift intervention of the Beninese government and the Republican Army, whose coordinated efforts helped restore calm and prevent further escalation.

The Commission cautioned that those involved in orchestrating the plot would be held personally and collectively accountable for any destruction, casualties, or instability triggered by their actions.

Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding democratic governance within the region, ECOWAS stated that it stands ready to support Benin through all appropriate measures including the possible activation of its standby force to protect the nation’s Constitution and preserve its territorial integrity.
