President Tinubu

President Tinubu administration has banned the establishment of new federal tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has approved a seven-year ban on the creation of new federal tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

The decision was reached on Wednesday during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by the President.

Minister of Education, Prof. Tunji Alausa, announced the moratorium while briefing State House correspondents, noting that it applies to all categories of tertiary institutions; universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

Alausa explained that Nigeria’s current education challenge is no longer about access but quality, stressing that the proliferation of institutions has worsened infrastructure deficits and reduced manpower efficiency.

“The duplication of tertiary institutions has significantly deteriorated infrastructure and staffing levels. If we do not act decisively, it will lead to marked declines in educational quality and undermine the international respect that Nigerian graduates command,” the Minister warned.
