Starmer has reshuffled his cabinet after Angela Rayner’s shock resignation.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a sweeping cabinet reshuffle following the surprise resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, a move that has stirred debate over Labour’s internal unity and political direction.

David Lammy, a senior Labour figure and former Foreign Secretary, has been appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary, stepping into the dual roles previously held by Rayner.

Rayner’s abrupt exit, amid rising party tensions, has been described as a major blow to Labour’s grassroots connection and could affect its performance at future elections. Her working-class appeal had long been seen as crucial to Starmer’s broader support base.

To stabilize his administration, Starmer unveiled key cabinet changes:

  • Yvette Cooper shifts from Home Secretary to Foreign Secretary.

  • Shabana Mahmood takes over as Home Secretary.

  • Steve Reed assumes the Housing Ministry.

  • Pat McFadden heads a newly expanded Ministry of Work and Pensions.

  • Douglas Alexander returns as Secretary for Scotland.

  • Liz Kendall becomes Science and Technology Secretary.

A senior government source described the reshuffle as “a moment to refocus and push ahead,” while another Labour insider noted that Rayner’s departure, though disruptive, allowed Starmer to inject “fresh energy” into the team.

Political analysts, however, warn that while the reshuffle projects strength, it could risk deepening party divisions if not carefully managed.
