Rivers Assembly has suspended Fubara impeachment after Tinubu’s intervention.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Rivers State House of Assembly has suspended impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, following the intervention of President Bola Tinubu earlier this month.

The decision was announced on Thursday during plenary at the Assembly’s resumed sitting in Port Harcourt.

Recall that at its first sitting of 2026, the House had commenced impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy over allegations of gross misconduct.

During plenary presided over by the Speaker, Majority Leader Major Jack read a notice outlining the allegations. These included:

  • Demolition of the Assembly complex
  • Alleged extra-budgetary spending
  • Withholding funds meant for the Assembly Service Commission
  • Refusal to comply with a Supreme Court ruling on legislative financial autonomy
  • Other actions deemed to constitute gross misconduct

The impeachment notice was issued pursuant to Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Chief Judge Declines to Constitute Panel

In a letter dated January 16, 2026, the Assembly requested the Rivers State Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Amadi, to constitute a seven-member panel to investigate the allegations.

However, Justice Amadi declined, citing a subsisting High Court order restraining him from taking further action. Governor Fubara and Deputy Governor Odu had secured separate injunctions from a High Court in Port Harcourt, preventing the Chief Judge from acting on the Assembly’s request.

The Chief Judge also noted that the Speaker and the Assembly had appealed the restraining order.

Tinubu’s Peace Intervention

The impeachment process gained momentum shortly after the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, accused Fubara of reneging on a peace agreement brokered by Tinubu in 2025.

On February 8, President Tinubu met separately with Fubara and Wike at his official residence in Aso Rock, Abuja, in a bid to resolve the lingering political crisis in Rivers State.

Following the meeting, Wike expressed optimism that the dispute was nearing a lasting resolution, describing the President’s intervention as decisive.

With the impeachment proceedings now suspended, attention shifts to ongoing reconciliation efforts aimed at restoring political stability in Rivers State.
