NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing what he described as growing internal crises and alleged infiltration by agents of the Nigerian state.
Obi disclosed his decision in a statement posted on his verified X account on Sunday.
The former Anambra State governor claimed that the same forces he alleged destabilised the Labour Party and forced his exit from the party are now creating similar tensions within the ADC.
According to Obi, the situation within the party has become increasingly characterised by internal conflicts, endless court cases, suspicion, and division rather than a genuine focus on national development and service.
“The same Nigerian state and its agents that created unnecessary crises and hostility within the Labour Party that forced me to leave now appear to be finding their way into the ADC,” he wrote.
Obi stated that his decision was not influenced by any personal grievances against the party’s leadership, including the National Chairman, David Mark, or former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
He stressed that he continues to hold both leaders in high regard.
The former presidential candidate said his political journey has always been driven by service, compassion, and nation-building rather than personal ambition.
“I am not desperate to be President, Vice President, or Senate President. I am desperate to see a society where people can live safely and with dignity,” Obi stated.
He also expressed concern over insecurity, poverty, and the increasing hardship faced by ordinary Nigerians, lamenting that many citizens now live in fear and uncertainty.
Obi described the country’s political atmosphere as toxic and discouraging, alleging that intimidation, insecurity, and systemic pressures have become normalised.
He further noted that many public figures silently endure emotional and personal struggles while attempting to serve sincerely under difficult conditions.
Despite his resignation from the ADC, Obi maintained that he remains hopeful about Nigeria’s future and believes the country can still achieve competent and compassionate leadership founded on justice and equal opportunity for all citizens.
