Datti Baba-Ahmed has declared for 2027 Presidency after Obi’s exit from Labour Party.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Former Vice-Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Baba-Ahmed made the declaration on Tuesday at a rally held at the Labour Party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

His announcement comes barely one week after the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, announced his exit from the Labour Party for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), fuelling speculation about realignments within the opposition.

Addressing party members and supporters, Baba-Ahmed insisted that his presidential ambition is neither reactionary nor influenced by Obi’s recent political move, stressing that his aspiration predates the 2023 general election.

“I have made myself available to contest for the office in 2027. I am not following anybody’s trajectory or stepping into anybody’s shoes,” he said.

“Let me also remind you that before His Excellency Governor Peter Obi filed for the presidency, I had aspired to the presidency. The records are there for anyone to verify,” Baba-Ahmed added.

The declaration marks the beginning of what is expected to be a competitive race within the Labour Party as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
