Abuja, Lagos, Rivers, Ogun, Others Faces Three-Day Heavy Rainfall, Thunderstorms

In its weather outlook released in Abuja on Saturday, NiMet cautioned residents, motorists, farmers, and airline operators to take precautionary measures during the forecast period.

Abuja, Lagos, Rivers, and Ogun among other states in Nigeria are currently facing three-day heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day weather alert warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and possible flooding across many states from Sunday to Tuesday.

In its weather outlook released in Abuja on Saturday, NiMet cautioned residents, motorists, farmers, and airline operators to take precautionary measures during the forecast period.

Sunday Forecast

  • North-East & North-West: Moderate rains expected in Jigawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Yobe, Borno, and Adamawa in the morning. Later in the day, thunderstorms with rains are expected in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, and parts of the North-East.

  • Flood Alert: Kebbi, Gombe, and Bauchi.

  • Central States: Light rains in Plateau, FCT, and Niger in the morning; intermittent rains later in Nasarawa, Benue, Kwara, and Kogi. Flood risks flagged in Niger, Plateau, Kogi, and Benue.

  • South: Cloudy skies in the morning, with moderate rains later in Enugu, Anambra, Oyo, Osun, Edo, Ondo, Ogun, Ekiti, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Delta, Rivers, Lagos, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River. Flood risks flagged in Osun.

Monday Forecast

  • North: Thunderstorms with moderate rains in Bauchi, Borno, Adamawa, Gombe, Taraba, Yola, Kano, Katsina, Yobe, Jigawa, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Kaduna.

  • Central Region: Light rains in FCT, Nasarawa, Benue, and Niger in the morning; afternoon showers in Niger, Plateau, Kwara, and Benue.

  • South: Cloudy morning skies, followed by rains in Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, Enugu, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, Bayelsa, and Lagos.

Tuesday Forecast

  • North: Thunderstorms and moderate rains in Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Yobe, Adamawa, Borno, Jigawa, Kano, and Kaduna in the morning. Afternoon/evening storms expected in Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, and Adamawa.

  • Central Region: Cloudy in the morning with moderate rains later in FCT, Niger, and Plateau.

  • South: Cloudy morning skies, with light rains forecast in Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, Cross River, and Lagos.

Safety Advisory

NiMet urged residents in flood-prone areas to activate emergency response plans, while also advising:

  • Avoid driving under heavy rain.

  • Farmers should delay applying fertiliser or pesticides before rainfall.

  • Provide warm clothing for vulnerable groups due to low night temperatures.

  • Secure loose objects to prevent accidents.

  • Disconnect appliances during thunderstorms.

  • Stay away from tall trees to avoid falling branches.

  • Airline operators should obtain airport-specific weather reports for safe flight planning.

The agency encouraged Nigerians to stay updated via its official platforms, including www.nimet.gov.ng.
