Details of how DIG Joseph Egbunike died of fishbone complications while eating food in his office has emerged.
Newsonline earlier reported that the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department, Joseph Egbunike is dead.
Newsonline Nigeria further gathered that Joseph Egbunike was eating in his office when he got hooked in the throat by a fishbone, and all efforts to retrieve it proved abortive.
According to a source who’s acquainted with the development, the high-ranking Police Officer was immediately rushed to the hospital, where doctors successfully removed it via surgery.
The source who spoke to this newspaper, said, “Joseph Egbunike felt better after the procedure, and returned home.
However, not long after returning home, he started feeling great discomfort again and had to be returned to the hospital; that is where he eventually died.”
DIG Joseph Obiajulu Egbunike who was head of the probe panel of suspended DCP Abba Kyari, according to Police sources gave up the ghost at the national hospital after a surgery which may have been a medical error.
According to police sources, when the physicians at the hospital saw the DIG’s pain, they immediately proposed an operation, which resulted in the DIG being brought to the theatre.
According to hospital sources, the National Hospital doctors should have allowed the senior officer to settle and his blood pressure to drop to a reasonable level before starting with the procedure, knowing full well that he had a history of high blood pressure.
“They disregarded it, and this is a medical mistake.” There’s no doubt that this contributed to his death.”
Egbunike, who was previously the DIG in charge of Finance and Administration before being named DIG Investigation, comes from Onitsha, Anambra state, and was previously the DIG in command of the South-East geopolitical zone.
The death of Joseph Egbunike was confirmed by a senior police officer who appeared to be in pain over the tragic news.
