CBN has retained interest rate at 26.5% as MPC holds MPR for second consecutive meeting.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has retained the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) at 26.50 per cent, maintaining the benchmark interest rate for the second consecutive Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting.

CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso announced the decision while briefing journalists after the conclusion of the 306th MPC meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to Cardoso, all 11 members of the committee were present at the meeting, where they reviewed recent domestic and global economic developments before unanimously deciding to leave the policy rate unchanged.

The decision underscores the apex bank’s continued commitment to its tight monetary policy stance aimed at sustaining the decline in inflation, preserving exchange rate stability, and strengthening recent macroeconomic gains.

The MPC had also retained the MPR at 26.50 per cent during its May 2026 meeting.

The latest decision comes as Nigeria’s headline inflation eased to 15.91 per cent in June 2026, although food inflation remains elevated, continuing to put pressure on household incomes across the country.

Analysts are expected to closely monitor the CBN’s next policy moves as the bank balances the need to curb inflation with efforts to support economic growth.
