Court has ordered Sowore to be remanded in Kuje prison and dismissed bias allegation against judge.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday ordered the remand of activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, in Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his application for a stay of execution.

Justice Mohammed Garba Umar issued the order after dismissing Sowore’s application seeking his recusal from the case over allegations of bias.

In a brief ruling, the court directed that Sowore be kept in custody pending the hearing and determination of his motion challenging the earlier revocation of his bail and the issuance of a bench warrant for his arrest.

The judge subsequently adjourned the matter until June 24 for the hearing of the application for stay.

Sowore’s new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN, had filed the motion seeking a stay of the court’s previous orders.

The activist arrived at the court premises accompanied by supporters and members of his movement, some of whom carried placards.

Justice Umar had on June 16 revoked the bail earlier granted to Sowore after he failed to appear before the court for the continuation of his trial.

The court also granted an oral application by counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS), Akinkolu Kehinde, SAN, and issued a bench warrant for Sowore’s arrest.

The DSS is prosecuting Sowore over allegations that he made false claims against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by describing him as “a criminal” in posts published on his X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts.

The case is expected to resume on June 24 when the court will hear arguments on the application seeking a stay of the orders revoking Sowore’s bail and authorising his arrest.
