Enugu Monarch has urged Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu or return him to UK or Kenya.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Igwe of Ezema Olo in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, His Royal Highness Ambassador Dr. Lawerence Agubuzu, has called on President Bola Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), or return him to either Kenya or the United Kingdom if the Federal Government is uncomfortable with his continued stay in Nigeria.

Kanu was arrested in Kenya during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari and subsequently brought back to Nigeria to face terrorism-related charges. He was later sentenced to life imprisonment by the Federal High Court and is currently being held at a maximum-security correctional facility in Sokoto.

Speaking at the 2026 National Traditional and Religious Leaders Summit on Health held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, Agubuzu said continued detention of the IPOB leader was fueling anger and restiveness among youths in the Southeast.

Referencing remarks earlier made by the Ooni of Ife at the summit, the monarch expressed concern over perceived double standards, noting that while calls for unity were being made, Kanu remained incarcerated.

“Bring this man out. If we don’t want him in Nigeria, send him back to Kenya or London, where he came from. Please do something about this,” Agubuzu appealed, adding that Nigeria cannot move forward without confronting difficult national issues.

The summit, themed “The Role of Traditional and Religious Leaders in Advancing the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative,” was convened to promote community participation in health sector reforms. However, proceedings took an unexpected turn when the Enugu monarch used his goodwill message to directly raise the issue of Kanu’s continued imprisonment before the President.

Agubuzu maintained that addressing the matter would help ease tensions in the Southeast and foster a stronger sense of national cohesion.
