Senate has classified kidnapping as an act of terrorism and propose death penalty.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Nigerian Senate has formally classified kidnapping as an act of terrorism, approving a resolution that seeks amendments to the Terrorism (Prevention) Act to impose the highest possible punishment on offenders.

At Wednesday’s plenary, lawmakers unanimously endorsed the proposal, declaring that anyone found guilty of kidnapping should face the death penalty once the legal revisions are completed.

The Senate said the resolution reflects a national demand for tougher action against the escalating wave of abductions across the country.

According to the chamber, “Upon conviction for the offence of kidnapping, the death penalty must be enforced.”

Lawmakers stressed that the measure is intended to serve as a powerful deterrent and deliver a clear message to criminal networks fueling insecurity nationwide.
