Wike has been accused of seeking total control in Rivers State amid fresh political tensions.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that fresh political tension is brewing in Rivers State as former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, faces mounting accusations of attempting to consolidate total control of the state’s political machinery.

Stakeholders in the state allege that Wike, despite his federal appointment, continues to exert heavy influence over Rivers, particularly in his strained relationship with Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The rift between both men dates back to late 2023, when a bitter fallout over loyalty and governance priorities erupted into a full-blown political crisis. The situation prompted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a six-month state of emergency in March 2025, effectively suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

During the emergency rule, retired Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibot Ekwe Ibas, was appointed as sole administrator, a move widely perceived as engineered by Wike to maintain a grip on Rivers’ affairs despite being in Abuja.

Although the state of emergency was lifted on Wednesday, September 17, and democratic institutions reinstated, Governor Fubara has yet to be seen publicly, fueling speculations of ongoing behind-the-scenes pressure. His prolonged absence has further strengthened suspicions that Wike is orchestrating events to ensure Fubara remains politically subdued.

Public opinion on social media has added fuel to the controversy. A viral post by journalist Emma Ik Umeh accused Wike of overreaching, alleging that after securing influence over the 23 Local Government Areas, taking control of board appointments, and positioning his allies in key offices, Wike is still pushing to control the Chief of Staff, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), and commissioners. “I pity Rivers State,” the post read, reflecting growing frustration among citizens.

Critics argue that Wike’s continued dominance undermines democratic governance in Rivers State, describing his influence as “overbearing” and “anti-people.” Civil society groups have warned that unless President Tinubu reins in the crisis, Rivers could slide back into instability.

However, loyalists of the FCT Minister dismiss the allegations as mere propaganda. They insist that Wike remains committed to the stability of Rivers and is only interested in ensuring peace and effective governance.

Political analysts believe the coming weeks will be decisive for Rivers State. With the House of Assembly already calling on Governor Fubara to submit commissioner-nominees and present an appropriation bill, the balance of power between Wike and Fubara may shape the future political landscape of the oil-rich state.
