Tinubu has renamed UNIMAID as Muhammadu Buhari University in Honour of Late Former President.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri, in memory of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London after a brief illness.

The declaration was made on Thursday during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session in Abuja held to honour Buhari’s life and legacy.

While addressing the solemn gathering of ministers and senior officials, President Tinubu paid heartfelt tribute to his predecessor, describing Buhari as a man of discipline, moral fortitude, and unshakable patriotism.

“President Muhammadu Buhari was not a perfect man, no leader is but he was a good, decent, and honourable man,” Tinubu said.

He acknowledged that Buhari’s leadership would remain open to public debate but maintained that his incorruptible character and moral influence would stand the test of time.

“His governance was marked by restraint, self-discipline, and a refusal to be driven by applause or political gain,” Tinubu noted. “He stood ramrod, unseduced by power, unshaken by popularity contests, and unafraid to do what was right, even when it was unpopular.”

Reflecting on their political partnership, which culminated in Nigeria’s first peaceful transition of power from one ruling party to another in 2015, Tinubu praised Buhari’s calm and principled leadership.

He stated that renaming the university in Maiduguri was both symbolic and significant, especially given the institution’s location in a region heavily affected by insurgency, a region where Buhari’s administration made substantial investments in peacebuilding and reconstruction.

“This is not merely an act of tribute,” the President said. “It is a permanent marker of his efforts to restore hope and rebuild lives in the Northeast.”

President Tinubu urged Nigerians to look beyond criticisms and remember Buhari’s quiet yet firm commitment to national service and integrity.

“His patriotism was expressed more in deeds than in words,” he said. “The values he upheld discipline, transparency, and courage, must guide future generations.”

The session ended with prayers and a moment of silence for the late president. Meanwhile, tributes continue to pour in from across Nigeria from political leaders to everyday citizens celebrating Buhari’s enduring legacy.
