President Tinubu has countered the Senate, stating that Late Nwosu’s legacy in democracy will endure.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to the late Professor Humphrey Nwosu, former chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC), emphasizing that his legacy will endure due to his unwavering commitment to democracy.

This Nigeria news platform understands that Tinubu’s remarks come amid contrasting opinions from the Senate on Nwosu’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

Speaking at Nwosu’s funeral service at St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Ajalli, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, described him as a statesman whose influence on the nation’s electoral system remains profound. He urged Nigerians to uphold the values Nwosu championed—integrity, patriotism, and dedication to democratic ideals.

In a statement released by the Special Adviser on Media to the Minister, Barr. Orji Uchenna Orji, Tinubu extended his condolences to the family, government, and people of Anambra State. He acknowledged Nwosu’s role in shaping Nigeria’s electoral history and called for reflection on his enduring contributions.

“As we mourn the d+ath of Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, we must also celebrate his profound accomplishments as a public administrator, political scientist, and electoral reformer,” Tinubu stated. “His unwavering commitment to democracy will be remembered beyond this generation.”

The President reassured Nigerians that his administration remains focused on economic recovery and democratic consolidation. “The fragile economy we inherited is now on the path to sustainable growth. We have overcome the worst, and I assure Nigerians that my administration will continue to deepen the benefits of democracy for all,” he said.

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, also paid tribute to Nwosu, highlighting his introduction of the Option A4 voting system and the Open Ballot process. He described the 1993 elections under Nwosu’s leadership as one of Nigeria’s fairest. Soludo urged Nwosu’s family and community to uphold his legacy, ensuring that his contributions to democracy continue to inspire future generations.
