President Tinubu has ordered FEC committee to tackle soaring food prices In Nigeria.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that President Bola Tinubu has directed a Federal Executive Council (FEC) committee to intensify efforts toward reducing food prices nationwide.

The directive was revealed by the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Sabi Abdullahi, during a one-day capacity-building workshop for journalists covering the Senate in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to Abdullahi, the committee’s mandate includes ensuring the safe passage of agricultural produce and commodities along critical transportation routes across the country, a move expected to cut down logistics costs that significantly inflate market prices.

“In addressing the high cost of transporting farm produce, I can confirm on good authority that the President has issued a marching order,” Abdullahi stated. “A committee within the FEC is working on promoting the safe passage of agricultural commodities nationwide. The expenses incurred along these routes are part of the reason commodities are expensive at the point of delivery.”

The Minister noted that the initiative ties directly to Tinubu’s broader vision of achieving food sovereignty through sustainable food security which encompasses availability, accessibility, affordability, and nutritional adequacy.

Abdullahi also disclosed upcoming programmes, including the Farmer Soil Health Scheme, designed to improve agricultural productivity, and sweeping cooperative sector reforms to strengthen resource mobilization and rural livelihoods.

“Mr. President has shown tremendous interest in cooperatives as a tool for economic activity and livelihood improvement. We are undertaking reforms in this sector, and I encourage the press corps to also explore cooperative opportunities,” he added.
