President Tinubu has committed over N90 billion to support Nigerian tertiary students.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has revealed that President Bola Tinubu has allocated more than N90 billion to support the education and welfare of students in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

Idris made the disclosure on Wednesday in Abuja during a courtesy visit from the platform of State Commissioners of Information, led by Borno State Commissioner of Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar.

According to the minister, the President’s initiative through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has enabled over 400,000 students nationwide to continue their studies without financial hurdles.

“The Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu has committed N90 billion to NELFUND. Tinubu’s vision is that no Nigerian child of school age should be denied access to tertiary education,” Idris stated.

He added that the support extends beyond tuition fees, covering upkeep allowances for students to ensure holistic support:

“This amount is not for school fees alone but also for the upkeep of over 400,000 students across various tertiary institutions in the country,” Idris noted.

Commitment to Inclusive Development

The Minister emphasized that the President’s policies aim to benefit all Nigerians, irrespective of political affiliation or religion:

“Nigeria under Tinubu is on the path to prosperity. We are in government to serve the interests of all, irrespective of political parties.”

He urged citizens to prioritize the welfare of students and patients over politics:

“Even if you don’t align politically, remember your children need NELFUND to stay in school, and your people who require cancer treatment can access the Cancer Screening and Treatment Centre provided under Tinubu’s leadership,” Idris said.

About NELFUND

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) was established by President Tinubu to ease the financial burden on students and expand access to higher education. Since its implementation, the program has become a flagship initiative of the administration, providing direct financial assistance to prevent interruptions in students’ academic pursuits.

As of September 3, 2025, 780,089 students had registered on the NELFUND platform, with 449,039 beneficiaries receiving support. Disbursements have reached N86.3 billion, including N47.6 billion for institutional fees across 218 schools and N38.7 billion for student upkeep allowances.

In a related update, NELFUND announced the relocation of its headquarters to a permanent office at House 12, Plot 103/104, Monrovia Street, Wuse 2, Abuja, effective September 5, 2025.
