Peter Obi’s one-term pledge has sparked Northern skepticism ahead of 2027 Presidential Election.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s vow to serve only one term if elected in 2027 has triggered debate and deepened political suspicion among Northern stakeholders, with many questioning the sincerity and political calculations behind the promise.

Over the weekend, Obi reaffirmed his commitment to a single four-year presidency, stating that his word was “sacrosanct.” In a statement, the former Anambra State governor declared:

“It is within this context that I reiterate my vow: I will serve only one term of four years if elected President. And that vow is sacrosanct… Even in this climate of cynicism, there are still a few whose actions have matched their words.”

However, Obi’s pledge has drawn mixed reactions from political commentators and regional stakeholders, especially in Northern Nigeria.

Hakeem Baba-Ahmed: Politicians Break Rules, Nigerians Must Demand Accountability

Reacting to Obi’s pledge, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, former Political Adviser to President Bola Tinubu, emphasized the need for Nigerians to critically interrogate all 2027 presidential candidates, regardless of party affiliation.

“Politicians are known for breaking rules. Anything is possible in this country,” Baba-Ahmed said in an interview with Daily Post. “Nigerians must interrogate every candidate… press them for specifics on security, education, healthcare, and the economy.”

He added that a committed leader with the right team and vision could make significant change within a four-year term:

“Four years is enough. If you come with a good team and a clear agenda, you can deliver results.”

Anthony Sani: North Can’t Trust Obi’s One-Term Promise

But Anthony Sani, former Secretary General of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), outrightly dismissed Obi’s one-term pledge, suggesting it was driven by political convenience rather than principle.

Sani argued that the North would be wary of Obi’s motives, pointing out that the Labour Party candidate still retains the constitutional right to contest for two terms.

“Obi’s pledge is politically expedient, meant to align with zoning arrangements. Northerners would likely prefer Tinubu, who has just one term left,” Sani stated.

He emphasized that such a critical decision would ultimately not rest with Obi alone, but with his political bloc:

“The decision to recontest wouldn’t be Obi’s alone. His group would influence that, making it hard for the North to trust him to leave office after just one term.”

Growing Political Tensions as 2027 Draws Near

The debate surrounding Obi’s one-term vow highlights the complex interplay of trust, regional interest, and political strategy ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election. With the country still grappling with economic hardship, insecurity, and governance challenges, many Nigerians are demanding clearer commitments, measurable agendas, and firm timelines from those seeking public office.

As campaign season gradually builds momentum, observers expect the issues of zoning, tenure limits, and performance records to play a central role in shaping voter sentiment.
