Lagos Government has sealed ICM Shoprite over alleged Tax Non-Compliance.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Lagos State Government has sealed a Shoprite outlet located at Ikeja City Mall for over two weeks, citing alleged tax non-compliance, a development that has disrupted shopping activities during the peak Yuletide season.

A Notice of Non-Compliance pasted at the premises, issued by the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS), states that the owner/occupant failed to meet statutory tax obligations under relevant tax laws. The notice warns that the violation is punishable by pecuniary penalties and possible imprisonment in line with the Personal Income Tax Act.

The prolonged closure has sparked frustration among shoppers and residents, many of whom rely on the outlet for last-minute festive purchases. Several customers who visited the location expressed disappointment over the shutdown, describing it as ill-timed amid heightened holiday demand.

“Amid Christmas celebrations, this has really affected our plans. This is one of the most accessible places to shop,” a shopper said.

LIRS cautioned that removing the notice without authorization constitutes an offence, adding that the premises would remain sealed pending compliance.

As of the time of filing this report, neither Shoprite management nor the Lagos State Government has issued an official statement on when the outlet will reopen.

The development adds to growing concerns among consumers and businesses over enforcement actions during the festive period, as shoppers continue to seek alternatives in an already crowded retail season.
