JAMB Ordeal: What Candidates Endure Before Writing Their Exams By Festus Edovia

Candidates should be provided with an environment that promotes success, not one that compounds their challenges.

Every year, thousands of candidates sitting for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination are subjected to avoidable hardship at various centres across Nigeria. Rather than focusing on performing well, many are forced to endure stressful and unfavourable conditions even before entering the exam hall.

A major concern is the prolonged waiting time. Candidates are often instructed to arrive early in the morning, only to remain unattended for hours. Many stand outside under harsh weather conditions without access to shade, seating, or basic comfort. This is particularly challenging for those who travel long distances or arrive without adequate preparation.

Poor organisation at some centres further worsens the situation. Candidates are frequently shuffled between queues without clear communication, while delays in accreditation and overcrowding create confusion and frustration.

Technical issues, especially network failures, are another recurring problem. Even after gaining access to the exam hall, candidates may experience additional delays due to unstable systems or poor internet connectivity. This heightens anxiety and raises concerns about missing scheduled exam times.

In some cases, exams slated for the morning are postponed until late in the day. By then, candidates are often exhausted, hungry, and mentally drained, conditions that can significantly affect their concentration and performance.

Transportation and safety challenges also come into play. Many candidates travel to unfamiliar locations at odd hours or return home late, exposing them to security risks and increased costs.

These are young individuals striving for academic advancement, and they deserve a more supportive experience. The examination body and its accredited centres must prioritise better planning, efficient coordination, improved infrastructure, and reliable technology. Candidates should be provided with an environment that promotes success, not one that compounds their challenges.
