Birth Certificate

FG has launched online birth and death registration portal, and introduced ₦5,000 Digital Birth Certificate Service.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Federal Government has launched a new digital platform that enables Nigerians to register births and deaths, apply for birth attestation, correct civil registration records and verify certificates online.

The initiative, introduced by the National Population Commission (NPC) and announced by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) on Tuesday, is aimed at digitising civil registration services and making them more accessible nationwide.

According to the NOA, the self-service platform is designed to eliminate the long queues and paperwork previously associated with obtaining birth and death certificates.

“Getting a birth or death certificate in Nigeria just got easier! You can also visit any NPC registration centre nationwide for assistance,” the agency stated.

The NOA explained that proper birth and death registration provides citizens with a legal identity and improves access to essential services such as healthcare, education, passports, financial services and government social programmes.

How to Apply for a Birth Certificate

Applicants can begin the process by visiting the NPC’s online self-service portal.

The commission stated that birth registration for children below the age of five remains free at all NPC registration centres across the country.

However, Nigerians who choose the online self-service option will pay a ₦5,000 processing fee.

To qualify for the online application, applicants must meet the following conditions:

  • The child must have been born in Nigeria.
  • The child must possess a National Identification Number (NIN).
  • At least one parent must be a Nigerian citizen.
  • One parent must have a valid birth certificate.
  • The birth certificate can only be downloaded once after successful processing.
  • Applicants requiring another copy must apply for a certificate reprint through the NPC portal.
  • All payments are non-refundable.

How to Register a Death

The NPC clarified that death registration remains free of charge.

Applicants are required to provide the informant’s National Identification Number before commencing the registration process. Where the deceased does not have a NIN, the applicant must state the reason for its absence.

Information required includes the deceased’s personal details, place of death, usual place of residence, occupation, date and cause of death, marital status, literacy level, and whether the death was certified by a medical doctor.

Applicants must also select the registration state, local government area and preferred NPC registration centre.

The commission said a confirmation email would be sent upon successful registration.

The new self-service platform is available through the National Population Commission’s website, while Nigerians who require physical assistance can visit any NPC registration centre nationwide.
