ECOWAS Startup Awards 2026

Nigerian Startups can win up tp $30,000 in ECOWAS Startup Awards 2026, see how to apply below.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Economic Community of West African States has opened applications for the second edition of the ECOWAS Startup Awards, offering a combined $65,000 in cash prizes to innovative businesses across West Africa.

Nigerian startups that meet the eligibility requirements can compete for the top prize of $30,000.

The ECOWAS Commission announced the programme as part of efforts to identify, celebrate and support high-impact startups while promoting digital entrepreneurship, regional integration and sustainable economic development.

The 2026 competition follows the inaugural ECOWAS Startup Awards held in Niamey, Niger, in November 2021.

Applications opened on August 3 and will close on August 31, 2026.

Sixty startups from the 12 ECOWAS member states are expected to participate in the programme.

Selected businesses will attend virtual masterclasses and startup clinics from September 21 to 25. A physical event will subsequently take place in Abuja from September 28 to 30, featuring exhibitions, pitch competitions, investor meetings and policy discussions.

The regional finals will be held on September 30, when shortlisted founders will present their businesses to an independent jury comprising industry professionals, investors and policy stakeholders.

The $65,000 prize fund will be shared among the three leading startups:

  • Winner: $30,000
  • First runner-up: $20,000
  • Second runner-up: $15,000

Beyond the cash prizes, selected participants will receive regional exposure, introductions to investors through deal rooms and opportunities to engage with other founders, policymakers and development partners.

They will also benefit from a six-month acceleration and mentorship programme, as well as digital tools such as computers, accessories and software.

Applications are open to startups operating in six sectors:

  • Education technology and skills development
  • Financial technology
  • Health technology
  • Agricultural technology and food systems
  • Clean technology, climate solutions and green innovation
  • Tourism, hospitality and travel technology

To qualify, an applicant must be a citizen of an ECOWAS member state and operate a startup registered and based within the region.

The business must have operated for at least two years, possess a functional product or service and demonstrate market traction or the potential to scale.

Applicants must also submit all required information and supporting documents.

Nigerian founders can apply through the official ECOWAS Startup Awards portal.

Applicants must first create an account using their full name and email address. A telephone number is optional but recommended, while the password must contain at least 10 characters.

After registration, applicants can log in to the dashboard and begin a new application. The form contains Sections A to J and can be saved as a draft before final submission.

Required documents include:

  • A national passport or other ECOWAS-approved identity document belonging to the lead founder
  • A recent passport photograph
  • A business registration certificate issued in an ECOWAS member state, where applicable
  • Two years of financial statements, management accounts or projections
  • A business plan not exceeding 10 pages, using single-line spacing and Times New Roman font in size 12
  • A pitch deck not exceeding 10 slides
  • A one-minute pitch video in MP4, MOV or WebM format, with a maximum file size of 100MB

The selection process will take place in national and regional phases.

During the national stage, each member state will nominate half of the startups allocated to it. The remaining places will be filled through the open application process, allowing founders to compete without first securing a government nomination.

Successful applicants will proceed to the regional finals in Abuja.

Applications will be assessed using the following criteria:

  • Problem definition and suitability of the proposed solution: 20 per cent
  • Innovation and originality: 20 per cent
  • Team capacity and ability to execute: 15 per cent
  • Market potential and scalability: 10 per cent
  • Business model and financial viability: 10 per cent
  • Social and economic impact: 10 per cent
  • Alignment with ECOWAS priorities: 10 per cent
  • Pitch quality, online voting and data integrity: 5 per cent

Eligible startups are advised to prepare their supporting materials early and submit their applications before the August 31 deadline.
