“Criminality Must Not Define Our Future” – Festus Edovia

In recent months, a disturbing trend has been on the rise – criminality seems to be gaining an upper hand in our society. From Violent robberies on our streets to cyber fraud schemes, ritual killings, kidnapping for ransom, and brazen acts of corruption in high places, lawlessness is slowly becoming the order of the day. This is not only alarming but also poses an existential threat to our nation’s stability and development.

No society can thrive when crime is allowed to flourish unchecked.
Sadly, what we are witnessing today is the product of years of neglect, weak governance, and a failure to enforce the value of law – when criminals operate freely and the law appears powerless, citizens lose faith in the justice system. This breakdown in trust emboldens wrongdoers and leaves ordinary people vulnerable.

Weak Institutions, Strong Criminals Networks

At the core of this crisis is a justice system struggling under the weight of inefficiency and corruption. Our security agencies often underfunded and poorly equipped, face and uphill battle against increasily sophisticated criminals. Even more troubling are reports of some law enforcement officers colluding with those they are meant to apprehend. This dangerous compromise not only undermines justice but also erodes public confidence.

Poverty and Desperation Feeding the Crisis

High unemployment and economic hardship further fuel the rise of criminality. With millions of young people jobless and hungry, crime often becomes a last resort. While poverty can never be an excuse for wrongdoing, it is a powerful catalyst that pushes vulnerable individuals into waiting arms of criminal gangs. Until we address the root causes of poverty and provide meaningful opportunities for our youth , the crime rate will continue to soar.

When Corruption becomes Culture

Equally worrisome is the moral decay in our society. Ill – gotten wealth is now celebrated while honest labor is derided . Politicians who plunder public resources are hailed as “big men”. This normalization of corruption sends the wrong message to the younger generation; that integrity does not pay.

Citizens ‘ silence; Aiding the Decay

Perhaps the most painful aspect of this crisis is the silence of the majority. Fear , indifference, or apathy has created an environment where criminals thrive. When good people choose to stay silent, evil will always have the upper hand.

The Way Forward

The government must urgently rebuild and reform our security institutions, ensuring they are professional, well funded, and free of corruption.

There must be political will at the highest level to pursue criminals – no matter how highly placed – and prosecute them swiftly and transparently . Economic reforms must focus on job creation and poverty alleviation to cut off the supply chains that feeds criminal networks.

Above all, citizens must rise and reclaim their role in shaping the society they desire. Communities must collaborate with security agencies, report criminal activities, and refuse to glorify those who profit from crime.

Criminality must not define our nation’s future. The fight against crime is not solely the responsibility of government but a collective duty. If we fail to act, we risk condemning ourselves – and future generations – to a life governed by fear and lawlessness.

The time to act is now. Silence is no longer an option.
