Usman Yusuf has been remanded in EFCC custody amid an N40bn fraud case.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Federal High Court in Kuje, Abuja has remanded the former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Professor Usman Yusuf, in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

This was revealed via a court ruling by Justice Chinyere E. Nwecheonwu on Thursday, January 29.

Yusuf, who was detained by the EFCC on Wednesday, January 29 appeared before Justice Chinyere E. Nwecheonwu for his arraignment on fraud charges.

However, the court adjourned the case to allow time for the charges to be amended.

In the brief court session, defense lawyer Isah Dokto Haruna, representing lead counsel O.I. Habeeb, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), requested bail for the defendant.

However, the judge rejected the request due to the postponement of the arraignment.

Justice Nwecheonwu said, “In the absence of a formal arraignment, bail at this stage is premature.”

The judge then directed that Yusuf stay in EFCC custody until his next court appearance.

The case has been adjourned to Monday, February 3.
