NUJ has condemned Wike’s alleged threat against Channels TV Journalist Seun Okinbaloye.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly condemned remarks attributed to Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), describing them as reckless and a threat to press freedom in Nigeria.

The union was reacting to comments reportedly made by the minister during a recent media chat, in which he said that if it were possible, he would have broken his television screen and shot Seun Okinbaloye, a journalist with Channels Television, following the broadcaster’s remarks about the dangers of a one-party system of government.

In a statement signed by its National President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the NUJ described the comment as an unacceptable attempt to intimidate the press and undermine democratic principles.

The union said it initially delayed responding to the issue in the expectation that the minister would reflect on his remarks and issue a retraction or apology. However, it noted that the absence of any clarification or apology has raised concerns that the statement may have been deliberate.

“This calculated silence deepens our concern and reinforces the perception that the threat was intentional,” the NUJ stated.

According to the organisation, such statements from a high-ranking government official could create a climate of fear for journalists carrying out their professional responsibilities.

“It sends a dangerous message that critical reporting will be met with hostility and threats of violence, which is entirely contrary to the ideals of a free and open society,” the statement added.

The NUJ called on the FCT minister to issue an immediate and unreserved apology for what it described as “reprehensible remarks.”

The union also urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to publicly condemn the comments and reaffirm its commitment to protecting journalists and safeguarding media independence.

In addition, the organisation called on media institutions, civil society groups, and democracy advocates to stand in solidarity against any actions that could threaten press freedom.

“The safety and security of journalists are fundamental to a healthy democracy, and any attempt to silence them must be met with a firm and united response,” the NUJ said.
