US has announced drug and terrorism charges against captured Venezuela’s President Maduro.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the United States on Saturday announced drug trafficking and terrorism-related charges against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, following his reported capture during a large-scale U.S. military operation in Venezuela.

The announcement was made by U.S. President Donald Trump via his Truth Social platform, where he claimed that U.S. forces had carried out a major strike against the South American country and apprehended its leader.

“The United States of America has successfully carried out a large-scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the country,” Trump said.

He added that the operation was conducted in collaboration with U.S. law enforcement agencies.

“This operation was done in conjunction with U.S. Law Enforcement,” he stated.

Trump also announced that he would address the development at a news conference scheduled for 11:00 a.m. (1600 GMT) at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, where he is concluding a two-week Christmas and New Year vacation.

The announcement comes amid long-standing U.S. accusations against Maduro, including allegations of drug trafficking and links to terrorism, which have strained relations between Washington and Caracas for years.
