Simon Ekpa has been sentenced to Six years for terrorism in Finland.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Simon Ekpa, a former Lahti municipal politician, has been sentenced to six years in prison by a Finnish court over terrorism-related offences.

The Päijät-Häme District Court handed down the verdict on Monday, September 1, following the conclusion of the high-profile case. Ekpa, 40, was found guilty of participating in a terrorist group, inciting the public to commit crimes for terrorist purposes, engaging in serious tax fraud, and violating provisions of the Lawyers Act.

The court ordered that Ekpa remain in custody. Authorities revealed that between August 2021 and November 2024, he sought to push for the independence of the so-called Biafra region in southeastern Nigeria by illegal means.

Investigators said Ekpa used social media to gain political influence, exploit divisions within a separatist movement, and help organize the group into a structured network. He allegedly supported armed factions by supplying weapons, explosives, and ammunition, and encouraged followers to commit crimes in Nigeria.

The main hearing spanned from May 30 to June 25, 2025, across 12 session days, with a three-judge panel delivering a unanimous verdict.

Ekpa was first arrested in December 2024 by Finnish authorities for alleged terrorist activities and public incitement with terrorist intent. While charges were initially sought against four other men, they were later dropped due to insufficient evidence.
